Biodiesel pump in Asheville offers drivers new fuel choice

Speaking of fuel, this is encouraging. Right now, $3 a gallon for diesel may seem steep, but it may not for long. Along with the 70% cut in emissions, the engine-friendly consistency of biodiesel may encourage many to try this. Makes me proud of my fellow progressive North Carolinians!

From today's Winston-Salem Journal:

As of Saturday, owners of diesel-engine automobiles and trucks could pump biodiesel, an alternative fuel made locally in Asheville, at the Gas-Up in West Asheville... Paying for that peace of mind does cost more than conventional fuel. Winslett estimated that a gallon of biodiesel will sell for about $3, or about 50 cents more than regular diesel. Since it is produced locally, biodiesel won't be subject to the same ups-and-downs as the world oil market, but the price per gallon could fluctuate because of supply and demand, Winslett said... The upside for biodiesel users is a 70 percent reduction in emissions. Biodiesel also acts as a lubricant, cleaning out the sulfur and other deposits left by regular diesel, greatly extending the life of an engine.
