Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

"OK, so you don't have any "conservative" ideas on how to help with the problems in Africa, and you don't care. Cool, thanks for admitting that."

Whoa, Bertha, not so fast! A) Because I didn't offer any ideas on how to help in Africa doesn't mean I don't have any. Re-read my post. You'll see why. B) I defy you to find anything in my post that said I don't care. I do care, I just care more about other things more. Once again, re-read my post. I refuse to let Bob Geldof (or Strother Bullins) set my caring agenda for me or to bully me with guilt. I happen to care more about the millions of children murdered in this country every year. I noticed you dodged that one completely.

"So I'm sorry, but I don't buy your story that American conservatives don't desire to involve themselves in things that aren't the responsibility of America."

You will never, ever find me accusing the Bush Administration of conservatism. That is an appellation of the press. As I have said before, I fail to understand why liberals hate Bush so much, he is one of their own. Every real conservative I know (with the exception of my pal, Andy) is opposed to the war in Iraq. We look on activities there the same way as we look on Geldof's activities in Africa. Don't confuse those who claim conservatism with those who practice it. Bush and his ilk are of a group who are self-named neo-conservatives. The better name for them is liberal hawks. They are the Nixonians: statist globalists with neo-Marxist tendencies. And please don't confuse the GOP with conservatism. There are a few conservatives still hanging around that tired old organization, but many of us have left. More leave every day.

"To be blunt, Steve, the conservative ideals that you speak of are not currently present in those that control today's Republican party. And I challenge those of you who consider yourselves to be true conservatives and/or good, honest Republicans to admit it."

Asked and answered counselor.

"Anyway, the conservatives that you tout may still exist, but they're not the ones that control America and possess the clear-cut conservative qualities that are frequently mentioned on this board."

There are a lot of us around, we just get tired of bashing our heads against a wall so we lay back and watch. Our day will come again.
