Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

What has happened to the Stokes County Conservatives???

I just got done reading The Stokes News regarding the budget that was just past by a 3-2 vote, and I’ll have to say, it makes me upset. … Why have a Republican majority if 3 out of the 5 commissioners want to be liberals??? I expected this from Leon Inman & Jimmy Walker because they are RINO’s (Republican in name only), but for Sandy McHugh to go along with them is just incredible. … Let me take that back, Sandy didn’t go along with them, she was the ringleader. She even uses the rhetoric. … Her quote in the paper was, “I’m not willing to vote on a budget if it hacks away county services.” Liberals have always used that rhetoric against conservatives; now we have Republicans using it. What has happened to the Stokes County Republican Party??? Let me take that back, the real question is What has happened to the Stokes County Conservatives???

This article made it sound like this final budget was all Sandy’s work; is that true??? If so, I can’t believe Sandy would go along with all this. … I see her budget eliminates all the new positions except those in Social Services and it fully funds the school budget and gets rid of the 10 percent cap (the 10 percent cap was how much the school system could spend from their current expense budget before having to get the okay from the board of commissioners.)

According to the county manager, the budget was “all done on the fly.” Why not just pass an interim budget instead of rushing things??? At the same meeting, Sandy, Jimmy, & Leon voted to raise the fire tax throughout the county. … I guess they believe we don’t pay enough in taxes in the county.
