Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Re: Re: Let The Truth Be Told

Tucker Miller responds to Steve:

Yep, Hubris. It is amazing to me that folks would continually dupe themselves about the mistreatment of Native Americans. But it's easier to ignore the actions of our govt. than to admit we took a great deal of it illegally.

"... the so-called "Native Americans" were killing one another in droves before a single European ever arrived here. I hate to burst your bubble, but your sainted "Native Americans" were killing each other over territory, pride, nationalism, and women and doing it in particularly savage ways."

Killing each other: yes. Killing each other off: no. That was a job for European conquistadors, settlers, and the US army. I've stood in Canyon del Muerto (canyon of death) and seen first hand the bullet holes that still remain in the canyon walls & floor. These are the remnants of a massacre of hundreds of Navajo WOMEN & CHILDREN! One massacre in a long line of abuse. No tribe, for any reason, behaved this savagely toward any other tribe. We call them "savage" due to an ignorance of their non-European culture. And their war practices, no matter how bloody, cannot hold a candle to the things white people have done to one another, (see the atrocities in WW I & II, and the American Civil War).

"Second, I don't know who you mean by "we," but I didn't kill anyone. And lastly, Europeans directly accounted for several hundred thousand deaths of pre-Columbus indigents at most. There haven't ever been "several hundred million" of them extant."

Congrats, you personally did not commit genocide against the Native Americans…that makes two of us. As far as the rest of the above claim…I call BS. In the Mississippi River Valley ALONE, there were probably more than 20 million Native American inhabitants. But since the first Europeans who arrived killed millions with their diseases, and destroyed whatever written documents that did exist in the Americas we will never know for sure.

"... the vast majority of territorial expansion by Europeans ...was accomplished by a combination of con-artistry and diplomacy."

I believe the ratio is approximately 90/10 con-artistry/diplomacy. After making thousands of treaties with hundreds of tribes, the US government repeatedly (& still continues to ) let go of their end of the bargain. Not one broken treaty (and the majority of them have been broken) between the US government & "Indian" tribes was broken by a tribe.

"...It is such a stupid statement it embarrasses me to see it written by you..."

I'm not not sure that I agree, or even that I know what you mean, but I'll take it as a compliment. Thanks Steve.
