Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Re: Re: RE: Cindy Sheehan's 'story'

They are also annoyed because she is dishonoring the service of her son to our country. By all the evidence, he made that service willingly and in the spirit of duty and patriotism.

And here is the real misunderstanding. Let's talk about this.

First of all, questioning your country's decision to go to war does not mean that you are unpatriotic! Serving your country doesn't mean blindly obeying orders, no questions asked. You know as well as I do that soldiers must be asking themselves every day what the hell they're doing and what the hell they were thinking when they enlisted. They're only human.

Secondly, just because you are the parent of a Marine doesn't mean you agree with what they are doing. It doesn't mean that you necessarily wanted your child to join the military to begin with. It also doesn't mean you love your child any less when you don't agree with their decisions.

Would she feel differently if she believed the war was a just cause? Yes, I believe she would. Instead, she believes her son's life was wasted. That isn't unpatriotic. That isn't disrepectful. That's being honest.

You claim that no one on the "Bully Pulpit" is saying that she shouldn't speak her mind. Yet, you criticize her for doing so. This is what makes ME so mad! Just because someone doesn't agree with you does not make what they have to say unimportant. You can tune her out if you want. That's your right. But others might have some interest in what she has to say. And in MY humble opinion, you are showing not only Ms. Sheehan, but also her son disrespect by disregarding her statements as 'crazy talk'.
