Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Related county workers common: Health director's firing highlighted conflicts of interest

What an interesting slant on this topic. It doesn't do much to dispel any false notions that we're a bunch of inbreds up in Stokes County, but I digress...

Chalfa is like every other elitist liberal who is deeply ingrained into the socialist side of the medical community. He is just angry that his little empire fell apart when he was clearly acting in he believes to be the best interests of the county. And there's the elitism: people like Chalfa, and Colleen what's-her-name (previous DoH director) are all about building their little Health Department empire, creating a socialist paradise right there in good old Stokes County. It makes no difference to them that the citizens (through their elected officials) disagree with their assessment of what is good for the county.

Government health departments should be involved in the business of sanitation and innoculation. They should not be in the business of dispensing contraceptives, facilitating abortion, or running free clinics. They should not be a beneficiary of Medicaid and Medicare and they should never, ever compete with the private sector. The state counterparts in Raleigh are aware that localities will generally not favor the unchecked expansion of socialized health services, so they have codified Chalfa's behavior by disassociating the Board of Health from elected county government.

One curiosity on the nepotism issue I have, though. Sandy says she recuses herself from issues related to the Tax Department, where Sarah works. How does she do this? According to state law, no commissioner is allowed to abstain from voting. In order to recuse herself, she would have to physically leave the meeting. Also, does Jimmy do the same regarding Board of Health issues? Do the board's rules allow for commissioners to wander in and out of meetings like this?
