Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Stokes lifts appointment of health-board chairman: Commissioners question secret ballot that ended director's job

The Stokes County Board of Commissioners has stripped the chairman of the county board of health of his appointment.

Dr. Nick Chalfa, a doctor who lives in Danbury and has served on the health board for more than four years, was removed from the board Monday night after a discussion arose about whether he violated state open-meetings laws by allowing a board vote by secret ballot.
