RALEIGH

Former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, the old conservative lion, no longer roars.

At a bookstore appearance in Raleigh on Saturday to mark the release of his memoirs, Helms did not speak to the group. Nor is he doing any live interviews to promote his book. The last speech he gave was nearly a year ago.

After 50 years of vigorously articulating the conservative viewpoint, Helms' voice has been muted as he struggles with the indignities of old age, including an inconstant memory.
