More than 5,000 celebrate life, work of Jesse Helms

By Mary M. Shaffrey
WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL WASHINGTON BUREAU

ARLINGTON, Va.

The man often referred to as 'Senator No' was honored last night as a man filled with values and convictions.

More than 5,000 people - including politicians, former staffers and conservative advocates - filled a hotel ballroom to pay tribute to former Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C.

The night was billed, in part, as a celebration of his recently released book, but it was really a celebration of Helms' years in the U.S. Senate.
