Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: "Advice & consent"

If we were sure Miers was another Thomas or Scalia, then who cares that she graduated from SMU or any other college.

But that's just the point. We're not sure of that. The issue of her educational pedigree is only pertinent because we know absolutely nothing else about her. To all appearances, Bush just nominated his secretary to be a Supreme Court justice. Brown has a judicial record and a prodigious paper trail of writing on the subject of constitutional interpretation. As Ann says, there are dozens of qualified possibilities who are known quantities. Bush just doesn't get it.
