Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Leight beats Robinson

It's official: Winston-Salem has finally tired of Vernon Robinson's special brand of divisive political BS.

By Bertrand M. Gutierrez in today's Winston-Salem Journal:

Democrat Molly Leight, a political newcomer, muscled Republican Vernon Robinson, a two-term incumbent, off the Winston-Salem City Council yesterday. Unofficial election results showed Leight winning 1,665 votes to Robinson's 922.
Robinson's defeat neutralizes a hard-line GOP voice on the council and gives Democrats a 7-1 advantage. The loss also marks a big turnaround for Robinson just a year after he nearly catapulted himself into the U.S. Congress. In 2004, after one of the most expensive primaries nationwide, Robinson lost in a runoff to Virginia Foxx, who went on to win the 5th District seat.
...Robinson... has no immediate plans to return to politics. His defeat marked a continuing decline in votes cast for him in his three runs for the council. In 1997, he won about 2,500 votes. In 2001, he had about 1,900. Yesterday, he tallied a little more than 900, barely half of Leight's total.
