Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Liddy Dole and the Lobbyist

Posting this for Strother (good luck and God bless, Strother):

From the 'Letters to the Editor' section of today's Winston-Salem Journal:

Influence

I am a lifelong Republican, and I cannot understand why the voters of North Carolina are not calling for Sen. Elizabeth Dole to resign from the U.S. Senate.

With all the government lobbying scandal hearings taking place in Washington today, her husband, Bob Dole, is one of the biggest lobbyists in Washington. He has even been hired by Dubai Ports World to lobby Congress to allow a foreign government to operate six of our U.S. seaports (“Dole vows not to lobby Congress...” Feb. 25). He says he won't lobby Congress, but he will have discussions with Bush administration officials and “help the American people understand the real facts.” Sen. Dole says her husband's lobbying will not influence her, but when all is said and done, of every dollar he makes by lobbying, 50 cents of it will be hers.

Excellent question, Rondie.
