Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Sign The Checks

The only thing Dubai Ports World will do is sign the checks.

You could say that about the AT&T deal to buy Bell South. While it might be true, the CEO of AT&T will get to tell Cingular Wireless where it builds towers and Bell South where it can put up ADSL switches.

It's a paper-thin distinction.
