Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: The killings tell a story

Welcome, Tanya. Let's try this one on for size. Is Buckley right? Are the Iraqi insurgents shifting tactics and targeting Iraqis moreso than Americans? If so, why? Is it because they are simply easier to kill, or is it, as Buckley suggests, that the US military is working its way into a virtual stand-down in anticipation of their imminent departure?

Let me just start off by saying that the American gov't needs to pull out our troops and turn the desert into glass and be done with it. Terrorist breed terrorist it is and will always be that way that is how they live over there we have the power to stop it now and save the world a lot of pain in the years to come.

Now to your questions, first yes, I agree that American soldiers are traveling around Iraqi streets less frequently than before, we are not in the same situation that we where three yrs ago. When we first went to war we had to take control and establish a gov’t and military group, which we have done, so there for we have less need to patrol the streets in combat. The militant groups that are left in Iraq are fighting between themselves because that is what they do, fight. These Iraqi militants are also attacking the civilians that want freedom and the “American Dream”, they feel as if these people are going against their beliefs and should be killed because they are dishonoring their religion and country. I say let them kill each other, less people we have to worry about.

As for the American military standing down, I can see that, we have to at some point let the new Iraqi gov’t and military assume control, so yes I believe that in the months to come that we are going to see less combat between our troops and the insurgents and are going to let the Iraqi military step in and be in charge of fighting the insurgents. I think the insurgents see this and that is the reason that they are attacking more Iraqi people than before and changing their war tactics. They are starting to adapt to the upcoming changes in this war, they are trying to attack as many American troops as they can with roadside bombs, which are getting more advance and less detectable, and if civilians are in the way, the more the better is how they see it.

So, I agree somewhat with what this Buckley guy is saying, as with any war situations change and both side of the war have to change to what tactics works best, the Iraqi insurgents are doing what they think will help them win the war, more advance roadside bombs and killing off the people that are against them. We are teaching the Iraqi people to defend themselves so we can get the hell out of dodge and maybe there will be peace between these people that have been fighting for centuries.
