Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Stokes commissioner candidates agree on education, not on budgets

My idea and ideal of government was expressed by Ronald Reagan in his first inaugural address, that government should walk by our side not ride on our backs.

-- Ron Carroll

Well first, Carroll's tongue should have turned black, shriveled up, and fallen out of his mouth at the very mention of Reagan's name. But, taking him at his word, I guess that means he'll be in favor of cutting taxes and eliminating the myriad departments and functions of County government that are not the proper function of government in the first place. He will join with the Turpins in rolling back the health and social services departments and limiting the schools to appropriate funding.

Yeah. Right. In a pig's eye. Carroll just demonstrates what a despicable liar he is with this statement.

I'd like to see some things done a little different. We have a commitment to serve...Government deserves a commitment to decide what's best for the entire county.

-- Mike Culler

Apparently Culler intends to run on the meaningless platitude platform. Maybe he's following Ernest's lead. What does any of that mean? He used a lot of words, but nothing was said. "Government deserves a commitment to decide what's best for the entire county." What a bunch of brainless blither. How does government deserve anything? I completely underestimated how shallow this guy is.

We need short-term and long-term planning so that we can provide a quality education. We also need to provide health care for our citizens.

-- Ernest Lankford

Well, there was no way for me to underestimate how shallow Ernest is. "We also need to provide health care for our citizens." Yeah, Ernest, you and Hillary Clinton. At least Lankford, unlike Carroll, is out of the closet: he is an unrepentant socialist.

We all make mistakes, but it seems like some on the current board have a hard time admitting their mistakes.

-- Brad Newsome

What does that mean, Brad? If you have something to say, stand up on your hind legs and say it.

Full disclosure: I have been toying with the idea of voting for Newsome. I have known his Dad for a long time and if the acorn didn't fall too far from the tree, he would certainly be no worse than the three Republican clowns above. I am watching, though. I could very easily find that I will only cast two votes in the commissioners' race this fall.
