Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Stokes board of education being sued

A group of parents and a retired principal are suing the Stokes County Board of Education for its decision earlier this year to move alternative-school students to North Stokes High School.

The 57 students attend Meadowbrook School, an alternative school near King.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Stokes Superior Court.

Eugene Lyons, a former principal of North Stokes, is the lead plaintiff. Three other plaintiffs - all parents of students who will enter North Stokes as freshmen next school year - call themselves the Association of Stokes Concerned Citizens.

They argue that moving students from the alternative school to the North Stokes campus will bring other students in contact with behavior and academic problems that they normally would not be exposed to.
