Former U.S. attorney to plead guilty
Winston-Salem Journal
RALEIGH - A former U.S. attorney who also was once a Superior Court judge will plead guilty to charges related to a tax-fraud conspiracy, federal prosecutors said yesterday.
Samuel T. Currin, who was also an aide to Sen. Jesse Helms and the chairman of the N.C. Republican Party, was indicted in April with three others after a sting by Internal Revenue Service investigators.
Currin, 57, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to launder $1.45 million through his law firm's client-trust account and obstructing the functions of the IRS by failing to disclose an offshore debit-card account, prosecutors said.
Currin has also agreed to plead guilty to obstructing a related grand jury investigation.
Currin could get 43 years in prison.
