Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Taking a moment for reflection

Steve -> "Now who sounds like a whiney liberal? You have yet to respond substantively to anything in this thread. All you have done is complain about how I have responded. And now you're trying to transfer that to me? I think not."

When have I called you "a whiney liberal?" And what am I trying to transfer to you?

-> "Maybe to someone who isn't paying attention. Or is it that they sound the same to someone who isn't interested in objectively considering their own position? There's that equivalences thing. Once again, I doubt either of those organizations has accused Bush of being a socialist or a Marxist, as I have. You won't hear them complaining about Bush and his rubber-stamp Congress bloating social spending. You also won't hear them berating him over his open borders policy."

Again, on the War in Iraq, you sound like the radicals on MoveOn.org. You're right, MoveOn doesn't accuse Bush of being a socialist or a Marxist like you do; they accuse Bush of being a fascist.

-> "And I guess that allows you to disregard whatever I might say about him, regardless of the truth of it. I hope you know that is the clarion call of the Kool-aid-drinking True Believers. But this isn't substantive, either. It's just more complaining about style."

That's right because you come across as belligerent. And you're right, it's about style because your current style gives me a headache. If the truth is on your side, then state it without the name calling and stuff. Be clear and precise; it's not too much to ask of somebody of your intellect.

-> "So this is the Internet dialog version of nanny-nanny-boo-boo? In any case, the style seemed to be fine with you until I belabored Bush and the Republicans."

Actually, you've been belaboring Bush and the Republicans since I've been on this board, but I didn't say anything because it wasn't directed at me personally. I mind my own business when you, Strother, and Andy go back and forth.

-> "Then they, like you, need to learn what is meant by ad hominem and the difference between name calling and a predicate nominative."

Is this how you talked when you were an elected official? If so, I can see why you lost. It sounds like other than you, everybody else is name calling and doing ad hominem attacks.

-> "And there it is. Whether or not my style of online discourse is lacking is irrelevant in the face of your ego. I may or may not be engaging in ad hominem (which I defy you to find from me in this thread), but if I "tick you off," then you reserve the moral high ground for whatever response you care to offer. Yeah, right."

Getting lectured by you about ego is quite amusing.

-> "I'm ready to hear any substantive rebuttal of what I offered at the beginning of this thread. I'm not holding my breath, though."

I hope you don't hold your breath either; at your age, that would probably be fatal. Repost what you offered at the beginning of this thread then I'll offer my opinion.
