Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Stokes candidates set their priorities

Schools, services and growth among the issues raised

Six candidates - three Democrats and three Republicans - are running for three open seats on the Stokes County Board of Commissioners.

Democratic candidates Brad Newsome, Stanley Smith, and Joe Southern and Republican candidates Ron Carroll, Mike Culler and Ernest Lankford have discussed issues in Stokes and identified their priorities.

The three candidates who get the most votes in the Nov. 7 general election will serve four-year terms.
