Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Craig to file request today to withdraw guilty plea

WASHINGTON (Winston-Salem Journal) - Sen. Larry Craig will file court documents today asking to withdraw his guilty plea in a sex sting that seems likely to end his career, his attorney said.

Craig, an Idaho Republican, pleaded guilty in August to disorderly conduct. A police report alleged that Craig had solicited sex from a male officer at the Minneapolis airport in June.

He has said he regrets that decision, which he said he made hastily and without talking to an attorney.

This is an illustration of what is wrong with our government in general and with the Congress in particular. It's also an excellent illustration (once again) of why the 17th Amendment needs so badly to be repealed. We are governed by a pack of congenitally stupid louts who can't think in any direction but their next PR move. And how did said louts ever make it to Congress? Why that's simple, Virginia. They got there because they were democratically elected by people who can barely read, let alone think critically, and by members of the female gender whose votes tend to depend on their particular estrogen levels at the time they enter the voting booth.

Between democracy and television, it is a wonder to me that even this pathetic shadow of the republic still stands.
