The more things change, the more they stay the same.
So Mark Johnson is the chair of the BoH now? I imagine that goes a long way toward making the full employment of relatives and friends of Jimmy Walker, Sam Hill, Buster Robertson, and Ron Carroll a stunning success.
I liked this one in particular:
“The health-department staff is very busy at this point,” Johnson said. “We’re very proud of our health department, and we’re going to continue to address, on a positive basis, health in Stokes County.”
As long as you understand that the health they are concerned with is the health of nepotism in Stokes County, all is clear, no?
Who's Mark Johnson??? I've never heard of him.
He's a member of the King illuminati. I'm pretty sure he's a dentist. Just another of the good ol' boys.
Why isn't the health director under the direct supervision of either the county manager or the county commissioners? I don't like the idea of an unelected board having such powers.
You'll have to speak to your local state representative about that. The makeup and governance of the board of health is completely dictated by the state, even down to the professional composition of the board. There are only two members of it who don't have to be medical professionals.
I don't have a problem with the board's oversight of the department manager, but I do have a problem with the fact that the commissioners can't choose whoever they want to be on the board and that the members do not server at-will. THe same problem exists with the social services board except that it's worse there. The commissioners only get to pick one member of that board. The rest are picked by the state. If the state wants that much control, then they can pay for the operation of those entities and let the county cut taxes.

You said that right.
