Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

County boards learn hard way in tax votes

RALEIGH —
That North Carolinians rejected a new tax in public votes across the state should come as no surprise. But that the real-estate transfer tax went down to such overwhelming defeat in the 16 counties voting had to shock county commissioners Tuesday night.
