Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

King's annual ceremony honors veterans

KING (Winston-Salem Journal) - For Robert Carroll of King, the Veterans Day ceremony yesterday afternoon at the King Veterans Memorial brought back memories.

Carroll, 86, served in the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa during World War II. Carroll went ashore at Normandy, France, on June 7, 1944, the day after the D-Day invasion began.

He later fought in the Battle of the Bulge during December 1944 and January of 1945. It was the last major offensive campaign launched by Germany during the war. Both the fighting and the weather were brutal.

β€œIt was snowy, cold and cloudy,” Carroll said. β€œI believe the Germans planned it that way. But we finally whipped them.”

Carroll was among the more than 300 people who attended the annual ceremony, which the town started about five years ago, town officials said.
