DEMS HOLD FIRE ON HUCKABEE; SEE 'EASY KILL' IN GENERAL ELECTION
(Drudge Report) - Democrat party officials are avoiding any and all criticism of Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, insiders reveal.
The Democratic National Committee has told staffers to hold all fire, until he secures the party's nomination.
The directive has come down from the highest levels within the party, according to a top source.
Within the DNC, Huckabee is known as the "glass jaw -- and they're just waiting to break it."
In the last three weeks since Huckabee's surge kicked in, the DNC hasn't released a single press release criticizing his rising candidacy.
The last DNC press release critical of Huckabee appeared back on March 2nd.
[DNC Press Release Attack Summary:
Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) – 37% (99 press releases)
Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY) – 28% (74)
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) – 24% (64)
Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) – 8% (20)
Governor Mike Huckabee – 2% (4)]
In fact, as the story broke over the weekend that Huckabee said he wanted to isolate AIDS patients back in 1992, the DNC ignored the opportunity to slam the candidate from the left.
"He'll easily be their McGovern, an easy kill," mocked one senior Democrat operative Tuesday morning from Washington.
"His letting out murderers because they shout 'Jesus', his wanting to put 300,000 AIDS patients and Magic Johnson into isolation, ain't even scratching the surface of what we've got on him."
The discipline the Democrats have shown in not engaging Huckabee has earned the praise of one former Republican Party official:
"The Democrats are doing a much better job restraining themselves than the GOP did in 2003 when Howard Dean looked like he was on the brink of winning the nomination."
A close friend to Huckabee explains: "Look, Mike is Hillary Clinton's worst nightmare. They should be squirming."

No matter what you think of Huckabee, doesn't this story sort of smack of Br'er Rabbit and the Tarbaby?
All I hear when they say that stuff about Huckabee is: "Please don't throw me into that briar patch!"
Why, oh why, would they be throwing around this sort of "reverse psychology?"

I'm lost, Matthew? How is this reverse psychology? Are you saying that Huckabee's more outrageous social views will find a warm place in the electorate's heart?
I'm only saying that it strikes me as odd that the Dems are "leaking" this kind of stuff out about Huckabee. I can guarantee you that it's calculated ... to do what, exactly, is beyond me.
But it is calculated.
My guess -- and it's purely that -- is that they'd like to see someone like Romney or Rudy get the Republican nod as the "electable" choice. Then, they get someone who doens't look all that different from the mainstream Dems. So then, it's an easy choice for a lot of folks (both sides of the aisle) to punch the D seeing as there's a general distaste for R's in the current political environment.
On the other hand, someone like Huckabee (for his social stands) or Paul (for his fiscal stands) actually offers the American public a real choice. Then, you have more of a stark difference between the parties and, frankly (aside from some super liberals in high places), I don't think the average voter is that left-leaning. But put two also-rans up -- one with a D and one with an R -- and the D will get it every time (at least in 2008).
Call me paranoid ... you might be right.
Oh, you are absolutely correct, Matthew. The Democrat operatives bow down nightly and pray to whatever gods they worship the the Republicans will be stupid enough to nominate Rudy or Mitt.
I think most of this is a lot of FUD generated by Dridge. That's about all he does any more. I don't believe the Democrats find Huckabee to be any more or less scary than any of the other second tier candidates. They probably know that he is a flash in the pan.
They do, however, have a problem if Huckabee and Hillary are the nominees. They will have a hard time going after him on the basis of his dishonesty with regard to taxes and nanny statism since his positions on those issues are indistinguishable from Hillary's. It's not a problem that should scare them, it just makes their strategy a little more difficult.
