Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Kucinich drops presidential bid

(The Plain Dealer) - Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kucinich is dropping out of the Democratic race for president.

Kucinich will make the announcement Friday at a news conference in Cleveland. In an exclusive interview with Plain Dealer editors and reporters, Kucinich said he will explain his "transition" tomorrow.

"I want to continue to serve in Congress," he said.

Kucinich said he will not endorse another Democrat in the primary.

Kucinich is seeking a seventh term in Congress, but his long-shot bid for the White House has drawn four Democratic opponents.

From National Review Online:

As much fun as it would be to pick on him one last time, I'm going to take a moment to salute him. Dennis Kucinich knows what he looks like. He knows he's polling in asterisk territory, and probably never surpassed six percent. He knows that everyone laughs when he speaks, and that his rivals roll their eyes when he calls for a Department of Peace, and that when he's addressing crowds at a candidate forum, everyone takes their bathroom break during his remarks.

He knows Russert is going to ask him the UFO question, if and when he gets to him at all. He knows that Gravel is going to steal his thunder as the angrier, crazier fringe candidate. He knows that if people are playing a drinking game for every time he says, "I'm the only one on this stage who voted to de-fund the war", they'll suffer alcohol poisoning before the debate is half done.

And yet day after day, Dennis Kucinich gets up out of bed and hits the trail and makes his case. And he's not terribly good at it, to judge from the poll numbers, but that relentless, dauntless determination in the face of enormous odds deserves some admiration.

Not surprisingly, Geraghty takes backhanded compliments to the extreme.
Regarding Kucinich, at least he believes in everything he says. The rest of the bunch — other than Gravel, I guess — are happy to change their focus from the war to the economy now that they know Americans have temporarily forgotten about dying soldiers in Iraq in order to fully concentrate on their mortgages as well as the challenges of buying $120 Chinese cross-trainers, Toyotas, and Guitar Hero II. The 'ending the war' subject is an impossible one to sell anymore, as we all realize Iraq is in utter disarray. It's much easier to listen to talk about taxes, tax relief, and financial assistance from the government.

I'm a soldier who has served two tours of duty (first tour was stateside after 9/11; the second tour was in Iraq) and for you to say that Iraq is in "utter disarray" tells me that you don't know what the hell you're talking about. Don't use us soldiers as political pawns for your surrender strategy. We have a job to do and we'll be damned that we're going to let some liberal peckerhead like yourself raise the white flag on us. God bless America.

Rambos and liberal peckerheads ... yep, God bless America, indeed.

From The Patriot Post:

Please pray for our Patriot Armed Forces standing in harm’s way around the world, and for their families—especially families of those fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, who granted their lives in defense of American liberty.

Well Mr. rambo, I'm not a liberal peckerhead by any stretch of the imagination, but I agree with Strother, Iraq is in complete disarray. It is self-evident to anyone who does not consider war to be a normal state of affairs. You won't see that, of course, but I'll give you a hint: How many ordered, peaceful societies have tens of thousands of armed soldiers patrolling the streets of their cities and the highways and byways of their countrysides.

All of you war-mongering jingoists can screech, "The surge is working! The surge is working!" to high heaven, but those of us with rational minds will continue to be amazed at your blindness.
