Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

UPDATE: Murder on Main Street in Pilot Mountain

PILOT MOUNTAIN (The Pilot) — The name of a man shot and killed Tuesday night around 9 p.m. has been released.

According to a release by Pilot Mountain Police Chief Darryl Bottoms Wednesday morning, his officers arrived at 607 W. Main St., at about 9:08 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a call of a suspicious vehicle in the area that had apparently been involved in a disturbance.

After hearning a disturbance in the home, the officers made entry and found Ruben James Jones, 37, of 1285 Shoals Road, Pinnacle, shot and killed in the kitchen area.

Bottoms reported that Jones had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.

Officials with Surry County Emergency Services pronounced Jones dead at the scene.

In addition to officers with the Pilot Mountain Police Department, assistance was also given by the Surry County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigations, who also brought its crime scene unit to help.

A shooting suspect has been identified, but Bottoms would not release the name of the suspect, since charges are still pending upon a decision by the District Attorney's office.

Bottoms said the investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released later.

Just as Pilot Mtn votes to allow liquor by the drink and an ABC store to be built inside the town limits, they have a murder on Main Street. How freaky is that? I bet Bro. Don Collins will say that was God handing down His punishment upon the town.

Probably, but he'll be wrong. Synchronicity has a way of fueling superstitious thought.
