Purchase of mountain land is OK'd
Grandfather Mountain a step closer to becoming state park
(Winston-Salem Journal) - Grandfather Mountain moved one step closer to becoming the newest state park when the Council of State approved yesterday North Carolina's purchase of the property.
The approval was an expected and necessary step in the process. Gov. Mike Easley had announced the $12 million deal and signed the agreement in September during a ceremony in McRae Meadow at the base of Grandfather Mountain. The Council of State has to approve land transactions involving the state.
The state will acquire 2,456 acres -- mostly the higher elevations and hiking trails in the rugged backcountry area of Grandfather on land in Avery, Watauga and Caldwell counties.
