DOT studies possible I-95 toll

State is analyzing traffic patterns, asks for public opinion

WILSON (MCCLATCHY-TRIBUNE INFORMATION SERVICES) - North Carolina needs new ways to build and maintain roads, including the possibility of making parts of Interstate 95 a toll road, the state's top transportation official said this week.

Gene Conti, the secretary of the N.C. Department of Transportation, also promised a more open method for how the state decides which projects to pursue.

Past DOT work plans have been "the state's greatest works of fiction," Conti said, adding that the state only delivered about half of what was included in the annual Transportation Improvement Programs.
