Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Hugh Chatham Bridge to be a memory soon


Demolition of the Hugh Chatham Bridge is expected to last until spring of next year.

(By Paul Garber, Winston-Salem Journal) - The long goodbye for the Hugh Chatham Bridge has begun.

Demolition crews have started removing pieces of the 79-year-old bridge.

The familiar steel trusses will likely come down early next year.

The project could take 18 months to complete.
