Bully Pulpit

In with the new. . . Nancy Reynolds Elementary School is officially open

(By Leslie Bray, The Stokes News) - The familiar saying “Out with the old, in with the new” is always a popular one at the turn of the year. That phrase has a special meaning for students at Nancy Reynolds Elementary School. They are returning to their community school for the first time since June 2009--a new version of the historic old school.

In with the new--yes, but it’s not quite out with the old. Many of the elements of the old school have been assimilated into the new facility--the huge blue dragon on the gym wall, original auditorium seats, the large bell. Still to come are the old trophies from the former school; they are being refurbished for display in the gym lobby.

“They can still feel the old school even inside the new school,” muses David Burge, Stokes County Schools Executive Director of Operations. According to Burge, members of the Nancy Reynolds Historical Committee who fought to keep the old school from being torn down seem pleased with how the new school has turned out.
