The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Former Stokes County Sheriff Mike Joyce dies after battle with cancer

(By Lisa O'Donnell, Winston-Salem Journal) - Colleagues and friends of former Stokes County Sheriff Mike Joyce, who died Thursday after battling cancer for nearly two years, remembered him as an effective and popular sheriff. He was 63.

Mike Marshall, the current Stokes sheriff, said Joyce died at 2:30 p.m. at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

"Mike is finally at rest," Marshall said. "We have lost a true friend and mentor. We ask everyone to keep Mike's family in mind."
