Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Lottery: Yielding Wonderful News?

By John Hood

RALEIGH — I am really, really excited about the wonderful things about to happen in North Carolina after the passage of a bill to create a state-run lottery.

I’m not enthusiastic about the lottery itself, mind you. It is a horrible idea. It will put state government in the gambling business, raise revenue in an inefficient and unfair manner, and give state and local politicians more money to waste.

But I’m willing to let bygones be bygones. North Carolina will have a government-run lottery (unless possible legal action blocks it). What I and other advocates of fiscal restraint and government reform should be excited about is what will happen next.
