NC Governor Calls for Evacuations Ahead of Ophelia
Unlike the gov. of Louisiana, Easley appears to know what he's doing...
(CNSNews.com) - North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley said Wednesday he expects storm surges of 9 to 11 feet from Hurricane Ophelia. Easley suggested that those in the path of the hurricane evacuate, adding that the storm is expected to be worse than anticipated Tuesday because it is a slow-moving hurricane. He said once the storm is underway, "we cannot get in and get you out" by boat, helicopter or plane. Easley said 61 shelters are open for evacuees so "there's no reason for someone not to evacuate if they have been asked to do so." Additionally, "FEMA has up to 250 people on the ground and ready to be in the field to do damage assessments Friday as soon as" the storm passes, Easley said. Also, local and state emergency management will be working in conjunction with FEMA "so that we all agree on the damage assessment.""
