Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Opportunity center to get expansion this year

(The Stokes News) - An addition could be in the near future for the Stokes Opportunity Center after positive discussions had by the county commissioners Monday night.

The county was refunded about $200,000 by CenterPoint at the direction of the state a few months ago, and county commissioners and other county officials have been batting around ideas on how to use the funding, which is mandated to be used for mental health services.

Finding other funding sources to hire a mental health coordinator for the county left the $200,000 open for other uses, and one suggestion that came up in the fall was to provide a much needed expansion of the Stokes Opportunity Center, which provides training, socializing and work opportunities for adults with mental disabilities.

They could refund it to the taxpayers. I know my mental health would benefit from that.

Since when is mental health a proper function of government?

A $5 dollar check in the mail comforts your soul that much? Wow, you're a cheap date, Steve.

Actually, it's more like $20, and it wouldn't come in the mail, the county isn't allowed to do that. It would come off my property taxes next year.

But yeah, if it was $20 less that the county was spending on mental health, it would positively warm the cockles of my heart.
