Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Community pleads for Nancy Reynolds Elementary School to be renovated

The auditorium at Nancy Reynolds Elementary School was packed on Tuesday night as the Stokes County Board of Education held a town hall style meeting with residents of the community. The topic to be discussed was: What does the community want to do about the fate of the 88-year old school?

The answer from the community was clear — renovate the school and by no means tear it down.
— Leslie Bray Evans

Ms. Bray-Evans didn't mention this in her report, but — during the meeting — Mr. Shelton specifically referred to a second possible architectural firm for the renovation job: the one that refurbished the 1926 Old Town School building in Winston-Salem exactly 10 years ago. According to Shelton, this firm could be on the short list for the Nancy Reynolds renovation; however, before making any decisions about the future of the school or spending any funds on the subject, the board wanted to hear from the community.

So far, so good … so stay tuned.

Keeping Nancy Reynolds as an operational school on the existing site is the most expensive and least beneficial idea for the county and the reynolds community.

Before using too many resources lobbying for that particular idea, folks in the community should think about the potential advantages of getting a brand new school at a different location AND keeping the current site and building as a historic spot to be given back to community. Then that side of the county could have modern school facilities and a community center with a $750,000 endowment to maintain it.

Good luck getting people in that neck of the woods to do any "Big picture thinking."
