King to Hold Lottery to Pick Year's Worth of Flags at Memorial
KING, NC (AP) — After months of dispute, the town of King is ready to pick the residents who'll get to display religious flags on a public war memorial.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the town will hold a lottery Wednesday to pick 52 people to fly a flag — or no flag — above a war memorial in honor of individual veterans.
The policy allows any of 41 symbols approved by the federal Veterans Administration. But almost all of the 110 applicants for the lottery want to display the Christian flag. Three applicants want no flag.
The policy was adopted after a complaint over the Christian flag that formerly flew above the memorial. Civil liberties groups have said they're not entirely sold on the lottery.
