Woman With Gun Causes Charlotte TV Station to Go Black During Evening News

CHARLOTTE, NC (WSOC, 12/21/10) - A woman is in custody after a police situation in the WSOC building. No one was hurt. The woman, who is in her mid-40s, arrived at WSOC studios, located on North Tryon Street, shortly before 5 p.m. WSOC’s security guard initially spoke to the woman, who pulled out a gun at some point and put it to her head. Police were immediately called. Channel 9 went off the air because employees had to evacuate the building. The lobby area is secured from the rest of the building. The woman was apparently distraught about something in her life and wanted someone to listen to her. SWAT was called in and the woman, whose name has not been released, was apprehended about about an hour. No hostages were taken. The gun she had was unloaded, police later learned.
