Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Special flags now fly at Veterans Office

(By Leslie Bray, The Stokes News) - A small office up at the Government Center was the site of big things recently. The Stokes County Veterans Service Office was filled with government officials and veterans recently, as a special dedication ceremony and open house was held.

The Dec. 23 event was to commemorate the presentation of flags to this office which is dedicated to honor and serve the veterans of Stokes County. The flags that are now displayed there have come from special places, including the nation’s capital and the Veterans Memorial in King.

A United States flag which has flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., was presented to the local veterans office at the open house that Thursday morning. It was sent down by the Washington office of North Carolina Senator Richard Burr, assisted by the efforts of Burr’s staff assistant, Mary Ann Clark. The presentation of this special flag was made by American Legion Post 290 Commander Lane Bennett and King Mayor Jack Warren; these men also presided over the entire dedication ceremony.
