Yadkin River Bridge on track to be completed in 2013, transportation secretary says
SALISBURY (By MICHAEL HEWLETT, Winston-Salem Journal) - It took more than 20 years, but the concrete beginnings of a new Yadkin River bridge can now be seen.
"We're very excited about getting this project under way," said Gene Conti, the secretary of the N.C. Department of Transportation, who visited the construction site Thursday afternoon.
Crews will replace the current bridge, built in 1955, with a new eight-lane bridge to handle traffic on one of the most congested areas of Interstate 85 in the state.
