Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

George Beverly Shea celebrates his 102nd birthday

MONTREAT, NC (AP) - Gospel singer George Beverly Shea celebrates his 102nd birthday today.

That's 10 years older than the Rev. Billy Graham, with whom he performed at evangelistic crusades for 60 years. Shea says Graham phoned him Saturday to chat about the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award that Shea will travel to Los Angeles to receive later this month.

Asked for his secret to long life, Shea responds, "The Lord, a good wife and coffee."

But he jokes that he's not sure if he's now 102 or 201.

Asked how many candles he'll have on today's birthday cake, he says: just one.
