Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Stokes County's health director is dismissed: Some in county think that the motive behind firing could be political

I believe Jimmy Walker has some explaining to do...

From Sherry Youngquist of the Winston-Salem Journal:

The Stokes County Board of Health has fired Don Moore, the county's health director for less than five months, a move that some in the county say may have been politically motivated.

Board member Kevin Walker, an optometrist in King, made the motion during Wednesday night's meeting.

Walker's sister worked under Moore until the end of July, when she resigned, and Walker's father, County Commissioner Jimmy Walker, publicly criticized Moore twice last month.

"My sister worked for the health department, and she had some conflict with the health department," Kevin Walker said yesterday. "Really, due to the conflict of interest, I try to stay out of discussing it."

But Walker said he did vote to fire Moore.
