Bully Pulpit

Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Hundreds turn out to honor Conaway

(The Stokes News) - Well more than 200 faithful supporters of Walnut Cove’s former police chief Barry Conaway filed into the cafeteria at Southeastern Middle School on March 1. There they were serving barbecue, slaw, pintos, desserts, and drinks; all free of charge. Charles and Mike Montgomery, aided by their family and many volunteers and contributors, donated their time and efforts to cook and serve the food to the public.

“We did this because most everyone in town likes Barry,” Charles Montgomery said. “We wanted to get everyone together to thank Barry for what he’s done for the town.”

Donations were accepted in an effort to help with Conaway’s legal fees. After 17 years of service to the town, the police chief was fired by newly-installed Town Manager Homer Dearmin in January.
