Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

King Fire Department will request fire tax increase - Public hearing is Feb. 7

(By Leslie Bray, The Stokes News) - The King Fire District tax rate may be experiencing an increase in coming months if a request by the King Fire Department (KFD) is granted. But not before the voice of the public is heard on the matter. The City of King will hold a public hearing on the possible fire tax increase on Monday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at King City Hall.

King Fire Chief Steven Roberson addressed the King City Council at their regular meeting on Monday, Jan.3. He explained to them that for the past two budget years, Forsyth County has denied KFD’s request for a fire tax increase. Last year, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners asked that future requests for increases be accompanied by a public hearing to gauge what residents think about the increase.

After Roberson’s presentation, Mayor Pro Tem Dillard Burnette made a motion to set the public hearing for the next Council meeting. Council member Charles Allen seconded the motion, and the vote was unanimous, 3-0. Council member Wesley Carter had been excused from Monday’s meeting due to a death in the family.
