Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

N.J. Gov. Chris Christie becoming a national hero of GOP

WILLIAMSPORT, PA. (By Perry Bacon Jr., The Washington Post) - You could describe him as a burly guy who has declared "I'm pretty fat" from a state better known for Tony Soprano and Snooki than its politicians. Or a man so fiery that he confronted a heckler at a recent event, wagged his finger in his face and said, "It's people who raise their voices and scream and yell like you who are dividing this country."

Or someone so reviled by teachers unions that representatives in New Jersey signed a memo that included a humorous reference to praying for his death.

But only a year into office, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has also emerged as one of the most popular figures in the Republican Party, a blunt-talking governor who unabashedly attacks unions and Democratic groups, cuts spending, blocks tax increases and runs his relatively liberal state in a conservative mold.

King expected to make decision about flag at meeting Monday

KING, NC (By Wesley Young, Winston-Salem Journal) - There’s been no shortage of discussion about the Christian flag at the Veteran’s Memorial in King, but the one that takes place Monday could be the most significant.

The King City Council is expected to take up the issue during its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday. The council is considering three options: leave the flag down; designate a place for religious flags approved by the U.S. military for government markers; or transfer the memorial to a private group so that the flag would not represent a possible breach of the First Amendment’s clause saying government should not endorse a religion.

The council voted 3-1 in September to take down the flag, after receiving complaints from a local resident and the ACLU. That decision sparked rallies, letters and a march last Saturday that drew 5,000 people.

(NJ Star-Ledger) - Speaking before a Republican crowd of about 1,000 in Indianapolis, NJ Gov. Charles Krauthammer: "Daily Show" Appearance "Diminishes" Obama

Dr. Charles Krauthammer: "One of the principle rules of governance is that when you are prince, you are the ruler. You should be husbanding your aura and be doling it out in small doses. This is particularly important for a man like Obama who rose to the presidency from charisma, particularly on that aura, it wasn't on his record. It wasn't on his achievements on his past, it was his persona. I don't think this diminishes the office, but it diminishes the man that is now holding the office."

Tabor upset with NAACP over flier

He calls it racist, hate-filled; NAACP says it's not political and just states the truth

(By Fran Daniel, Winston-Salem Journal) -
Some local Republicans said yesterday that a flier describing six members of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board as “new segregationist members” does nothing to help in discussions about educating children.

“This literature here is just a racist, hate-filled, demonizing piece of literature,” Nathan Tabor, the chairman of the Forsyth County Republican Party, said of a flier released by the local and state NAACP groups.

The school-board members referenced in the flier are Jeannie Metcalf, Jill Tackabery, Donny Lambeth, A.L “Buddy” Collins, Marilyn Parker and Jane Goins. It also has a photo of Metcalf, labeling her as the “New Segregationist,” and one of George Wallace, the former governor of Alabama known for his segregationist views. He was referred to as the “Old Segregationist.”

Homecoming King Dies Following Traumatic Football Injury

SPRING HILL, KS (WDAF) — A Spring Hill High School senior died Friday morning from injuries he sustained during a football game against Osawatomie Thursday evening. Nathan Stiles suffered a head injury and was Life Flighted to the University of Kansas Hospital where he died early Friday morning.

Witnesses said Stiles had just intercepted a pass when he was hit by another player during the game. He then ran to the sidelines where he collapsed. Minutes later he was life flighted to the University of Kansas Hospital where he later died.

Spring Hill went on to win the game against Osawatomie, 99 to 72, making it a record-breaking game. But on Friday, rather than celebrating, Spring Hill students learned their 2010 homecoming king had died from his injuries. It was a shock to everyone. Family and friends of Stiles said football was his life and they're stunned that a sport he loved may have led to his death.

Meek: I Turned Down Crist Cross

(By Peter Wallsten, The Wall Street Journal) - Florida independent Senate candidate Charlie Crist personally lobbied Democratic candidate Kendrick Meek to exit the race this week, offering him a cross that had been a gift from his sister, Mr. Meek said Friday.

The gesture occurred Monday as Mr. Crist and Mr. Meek were surrounded by local Jewish leaders at a Hollywood, Fla., meeting of the pro-Israel lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

“I was shocked when he did it,” Mr. Meek said in an interview late Friday. “I told him to keep the cross and that I carry my Christianity in my heart.”

Crist spokesman Danny Kanner said he would not comment on a private conversation.

Lisa, are you going to shut down my Facebook page for writing this?

(By Sarah Palin) - [Thursday], Lisa Murkowski’s hired guns threatened radio host Dan Fagan, and more importantly, the station that airs Fagan’s show, with legal action for allegedly illegal “electioneering.” The station, unlike Murkowski, who is flush with millions of dollars from vested corporate interests, does not have a budget for a legal defense. So it did what any small market station would do when threatened by Beltway lawyers charging $500 to $1000 an hour – they pulled Dan Fagan off the air.

Does all this sound heavy handed? It is. It is an interference with Dan Fagan’s constitutional right to free speech. It is also a shocking indictment against Lisa Murkowski. How low will she go to hold onto power? First, she gets the Division of Elections to change its write-in process – a process that Judge Pfiffner correctly determined had been in place without change for 50 years. She is accepting financial support from federal contractors, an act that is highly questionable and now pending before the FEC. And today, she played her last card. She made it clear that if you disagree with her and encourage others to exercise their civic rights, she’ll take you off the air.

The concept of “electioneering” involves several issues, but typically refers to campaigning at the polls, which is appropriately banned. Under federal law, it can also mean paying for advertising on broadcast media during a federal election cycle, and it requires disclosures if done by groups and corporations. Fagan used satire to mock Murkowski’s write-in efforts and encouraged Alaskan’s to run as write-in candidates. That is not illegal. That is free speech.

Ohio McDonald’s Encourages Employees to Vote Republican

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A handful of McDonald’s employees in northeastern Ohio received handbills in their most recent paychecks suggesting they vote for three Republican candidates.

The fast food chain’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., quickly condemned the action by Canton franchisee Paul Siegfried, saying it violated company policy. Allen Schulman, an attorney representing one of the employees, said Friday he had forwarded the paycheck insert to Canton’s city law director, citing an Ohio law against corporate advocacy in elections.

Nazi, Nazi, Nazi: MSNBC's Chris Matthews’ Amazing Hypocrisy - Called Tea Party Nazis & Stormtroopers All Week

MSNBC's Ed Schultz Denounces Stewart/Colbert Rally (and Glenn Beck)

(By Meredith Jessup, The Blaze) - Liberal radio and MSNBC host Ed Schultz took to the airwaves Friday to condemn comedians Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert and their “Restore Sanity and/or Fear” rally.

Schultz seemed puzzled by the rally’s lack of seriousness, saying he didn’t know if the rally as “a spoof, a joke, a promotion on their part… what’s happening here?”

In addition, Schultz didn’t pass up a chance to attack conservative radio and TV host Glenn Beck, deriding Beck as a “fraudulent pig,“ a ”drunk“ and a ”phony“ he has ”no respect for.” Nice.

Schultz is the second liberal radio talker to come out against the Stewart/Colbert rally planned for Saturday. Liberal host Bill Press eloquently dismissed the event as “a big masturbation festival on the National Mall.”

AZ Dems Encourage Voters to go Libertarian to Hurt GOP

(By Meredith Jessup, The Blaze) - It’s not only election season; it’s the season of political hijinks.

There have been numerous reports of states’ Democratic Parties propping up fake tea party candidates in an effort to split the GOP vote.  Now, according to a report from the Arizona Daily Star, the Arizona Democratic Party has actually been caught circulating fliers in the state’s 8th Congressional District touting Libertarian Steve Stoltz as the “real conservative” in the race, a clear attempt to draw votes away from Republican and tea party-favorite Jesse Kelly.

The great campaign of 2010

(By Charles Krauthammer, The Washington Post) - In a radio interview that aired Monday on Univision, President Obama chided Latinos who "sit out the election instead of saying, 'We're gonna punish our enemies and we're gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us.' " Quite a uniter, urging Hispanics to go to the polls to exact political revenge on their enemies - presumably, for example, the near-60 percent of Americans who support the new Arizona immigration law.

This from a president who won't even use "enemies" to describe an Iranian regime that is helping kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. This from a man who rose to prominence thunderously declaring that we were not blue states or red states, not black America or white America or Latino America - but the United States of America.

This is how the great post-partisan, post-racial, New Politics presidency ends - not with a bang, not with a whimper, but with a desperate election-eve plea for ethnic retribution.

Forget Black Panthers – Congresswoman Warns DOJ of Tea Party Voter Intimidation

(By Meredith Jessup, The Blaze) - Armed New Black Panther Party members standing outside of a polling location during the 2008 election might not have raised suspicions of voter intimidation from Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department, but, according to one U.S. Congresswoman, peaceful tea partiers should.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, has asked the DOJ to investigate tea party groups for “intimidating black and Hispanic voters” in her district.

Desperate Distancing? Harry Reid Says 'I Don‘t Carry the President’s Water'

Nancy Pelosi Quitting If Democrats Lose?

It's Looking Like Speaker or Nothing for Pelosi

(Yahoo! News) - Democrats on Capitol Hill and K Street are increasingly convinced that Speaker Nancy Pelosi would have little interest in being Minority Leader -- and may start preparing to leave Congress altogether -- if Republicans win the House next week.

Pelosi and her allies adamantly refuse to entertain questions about a possible Democratic minority. But Democratic sources say they have a hard time imagining the 70-year-old, independently wealthy California Democrat would want to return to the less-powerful post that she held for four years before becoming Speaker in 2007, particularly after having spent the past four years driving the Congressional agenda.

Should Republicans sweep into power on Nov. 2, the pivotal question that some Democrats have begun contemplating is one of timing: Does Pelosi step aside immediately, or does she stick around for a few months as Minority Leader to help smooth the transition to her successor? Both scenarios assume Pelosi heads for the exits within a few weeks or months.

"It's pretty clear that what she does is just leave," said a former House leadership aide who now works downtown. The Democrat had no direct knowledge of Pelosi's plans but predicted she would probably resign from Congress in fairly short order. "Once you've been Speaker of the House, why would she just want to be a Member of Congress?"

Pelosi's predecessor, former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), opted not to run for Minority Leader when Republicans lost the House in 2006; he resigned from Congress slightly more than a year later, on Nov. 26, 2007, after fading into obscurity.

Auto restorer works his magic on 1977 car given to man by Elvis Presley

(By Monica Young, Winston-Salem Journal) - It was two years ago at a classic auto-parts trade show in Las Vegas that Jim Barber was approached by a father and son interested in restoring a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am.

He could tell by the conversation that the men had researched both his company — Classic Automotive Restoration Specialists in Belews Creek — and what their car needed.

“They were insistent that I look at the car right away. I went with them, and a limo pulled around to take us to the car,” Barber said.

In the garage, Jason Awad — a Las Vegas lawyer — showed Barber a dingy, white second-generation Trans Am with damaged red seats and 82,000 miles on the odometer. The hood would not open, and the faulty brakes made the car unable to drive. The power window on the driver’s side would not close.

Barber knows from his line of work that every car has a story. He was wondering what it was with this one. Awad told him to look at the dash again.

So Barber ducked under the drooping headliner and started checking from left to right. He paused when he saw a brass plaque inserted into the red dash.

“Presented to my friend, Jason. Elvis. Oct. 1976.’’

“And then I got what was so special about this car,” Barber said.

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann Unleashes 20 Minute Tirade Against Tea Partiers: ‘Unqualified, Unstable Individuals’

Al Gore Leaves Car Idling for 60 Minutes During Enviro Speech

(By Jonathon M. Seidl, The Blaze) - Al Gore loves the environment. He made a documentary about saving it, and frequently gives speeches about it.

So after allegedly leaving his car idling for 60 minutes while speaking at the Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development in Sweden on October 10, it‘s not surprising that some are wondering if Gore’s suggestions on reducing emissions apply to everyone but him.

According to Einar Du Rietz on the website Climatedepot.com, Gore ignored requests from the speech’s organizers to use public transportation to go to the event — a request meant to help minimize CO2 emissions — and rented a car for the speech.

And although leaving a car idle for so long carries penalties, Gore may have been given a pass.

NFL Protecting Democrats

National Football League Backs Reid Over Angle; Invests $340,000 to Save Incumbent Congress

(CNSNews.com) -
The National Football League’s political action committee—Gridiron PAC—has weighed in on the hotly contested U.S. Senate election in Nevada that pits conservative Republican challenger Sharron Angle against Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid.

The PAC has given $10,000 to Reid—the maximum it can give in a single election cycle—and no money to Angle, according to Federal Election Commission data compiled by OpenSecrets.org.

The NFL’s PAC also contributed to other incumbent Democratic senators facing viable challengers this year, giving $5,000 to Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas; $5,000 to Russ Feingold of Wisconsin; $5,000 to Barbara Boxer of California; $5,000 to Michael Bennet of Colorado; and $5,000 to Patty Murray of Washington.

In none of these races did the NFL’s PAC contribute to the Republican challenger.

Of the $341,000 the NFL’s PAC has contributed to congressional candidates in this election cycle, $340,000 has gone to incumbents. The other $1,000 went to Brian Rooney, an unsuccessful Republican primary candidate in a U.S. congressional district in Michigan, who is the grandson of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney.

The Louisiana Senate race is the only federal election contest in this election cycle where the Gridiron PAC has contributed to the nominees of both major parties. There, the PAC gave $1,500 to Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.), who is a sitting House member running as the Democratic challenger to incumbent Republican Sen. David Vitter. The PAC also gave $2,500 to Vitter.

Other than Reid, the only other candidates to whom the NFL’s PAC has maxed out with $10,000 in contributions are House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.); Sen. Charles Schumer (D.-N.Y.), the vice chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus (and third ranking Democrat in the Senate); Rep. Edolphus Towns (D.-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform; and Rep. Lamar Smith (R.-Tex.), the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee.

Christine O'Donnell Victim of Bogus Left-Wing Sex Smear

(UK Mail Online) - A U.S. blog has sparked outrage on both sides of the political spectrum after publishing a story accusing Christine O'Donnell of having a drunken 'one-night stand' with a man 14 years her junior, three years ago.

Gawker said it had paid an unnamed man 'low four-figures' for the story -published just one week before mid-term elections, in which Miss O'Donnell is running for Senate.

In an anonymous post, the 25-year-old Philadelphia man claims Miss O'Donnell was 'a decent kisser' - but that she told him she was a virgin.

He also claims the two did not have sex and makes intimate comments about her body and grooming.

Gawker's sister website Jezebel reported that the post had 180,000 hits in two hours.

But it has sparked a backlash against Gawker for publishing the story from media on both the left and the right - as well as commenters on Twitter and Facebook.

Internet Reception Reaches Summit of Mount Everest

(AFP) - Climbers at the top of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, will now be able to make video calls and surf the internet on their cell phones, a Nepalese telecom group claimed Thursday.

Ncell, a subsidiary of Swedish phone giant TeliaSonera, said it set up a high-speed third-generation (3G) phone base station at an altitude of 17,000 feet (5,200 meters), near Gorakshep village in the Everest region.

"Today we made the [world's] highest video call from Mount Everest base camp successfully. The coverage of the network will reach up to the peak of the Everest," Ncell Nepal chief Pasi Koistinen said in Kathmandu.

Obama to Visit Indonesian Mosque

(By KENDRA MARR, POLITICO.com) - President Barack Obama will visit one of the world's largest mosques when he makes good on a long-delayed promise to visit Indonesia, the island nation where he lived briefly as a child.

The president will visit Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta - the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the third largest Muslim house of worship in the world - during his swing through the country Nov. 9-10. Islam is the dominant religion in populous Indonesia, making it the world's largest Muslim-majority nation.

White House national security aide Ben Rhodes said the visit is standard protocol for Obama, who visited the famed Blue Mosque while on a visit to Turkey shortly after his inauguration. "When he visited Muslim-majority countries as president, he has often visited the most prominent mosques," Rhodes said.

Joe Sestak Launches Doggy Doo Attack Ad

(Gateway Pundit) - The most offensive ad of the year…

Pelosi-Democrat Rep. Joe Sestak actually flings dog sh*t at Pat Toomey in final attack ad of the year. Classy Joe, real classy.

Townhall reported on Toomey’s response:

In his final push against Republican Pat Toomey in the Pennsylvania Senate race, an advertisement from Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak features a bag of feces collected from his family dog. Sestak swings the bag into the trash can, and equates it with the policies of his opponent.

Toomey’s response to this ad is more moderated at a recent campaign event in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. With that advertisement as the baseline, though, it’s hard to think of a response that wouldn’t seem measured.

“The DCC is spending more money attacking me with lies and dishonest ads than they have in any other state,” said Toomey. “That’s how badly they want to win this race.”

John Kerry Throws Tantrum Over Talk Radio

Kerry voices frustration with US political scene

BOSTON (By Glen Johnson, AP) -
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry unleashed a broadside Thursday against Republican "obstructionism," saying the GOP and its talk-show allies have created a "period of know-nothingism" in the country.

With his party braced for defeats in the midterm elections, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce that a Republican machine -- fueled by talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck -- has undermined progress and misled the public into believing Democrats created the country's current economic problems.

Kerry singled out attacks on an energy deal he was negotiating with Republicans, which fell apart amid criticism of an emissions-trading program. Some 20 Senate candidates are now opposing the proposed deal in their campaigns.

"It's absurd. We've lost our minds," said a clearly exasperated Kerry. "We're in a period of know-nothingism in the country, where truth and science and facts don't weigh in. It's all short-order, lowest common denominator, cheap-seat politics."

Bill Clinton Tried to Lure Democrat Kendrick Meek Out of Florida Senate Race

(FoxNews.com) - Former President Bill Clinton tried last week to get Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek to quit the U.S. Senate race in Florida and endorse Gov. Charlie Crist's independent bid, Politico reported Thursday, adding that the effort nearly succeeded.

Politico reported that during Clinton's trip to Florida, Meek agreed twice to drop out of the race to help Democrats defeat the Republican nominee, Tea Party loyalist Marco Rubio, but Meek eventually changed his mind.

The premise was that if Meek's followers threw their support behind Crist, the former Republican likely would defeat Rubio.

A Referendum on the Redeemer

Barack Obama put the Democrats in the position of forever redeeming a fallen nation rather than leading a great one.

(By SHELBY STEELE, The Wall Street Journal) -
Whether or not the Republicans win big next week, it is already clear that the "transformative" aspirations of the Obama presidency—the special promise of this first black president to "change" us into a better society—are much less likely to materialize. There will be enough Republican gains to make the "no" in the "party of no" even more formidable, if not definitive.

But apart from this politics of numbers, there is also now a deepening disenchantment with Barack Obama himself. (He has a meager 37% approval rating by the latest Harris poll.) His embarrassed supporters console themselves that their intentions were good; their vote helped make history. But for Mr. Obama himself there is no road back to the charisma and political capital he enjoyed on his inauguration day.

How is it that Barack Obama could step into the presidency with an air of inevitability and then, in less than two years, find himself unwelcome at the campaign rallies of many of his fellow Democrats?

Bill Clinton's 'retribution tour' against Barack Obama

(By Toby Harnden, UK Telegraph) - Byron York wonders here whether Bill Clinton wants Democrats to win next Tuesday. That may be going too far but he is certainly onto something when he suggests that (the) Clinton(s) has/have (politically speaking, they’re inseparable) a double agenda right now. As I reported a couple of weeks ago, Bill himself has stated that his principal motivation for going on the campaign trail was to thank those who had supported his wife against Obama.

After my column was published, the NYT did a big piece on Bill on the campaign trail and buried the stuff about Clinton not being close to Obama and in reality still campaigning for Hillary. But it was still in there:

Still, Mr. Clinton is not particularly close to Mr. Obama. He coordinates with Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., but makes his own decisions about whom to help.He has focused on aiding Democrats who endorsed Mrs. Clinton against Mr. Obama, like Representative Mark Schauer here in Battle Creek. Some Democrats call it a “retribution tour”; aides said they think of it as a “thank you tour.”

Ann Coulter: You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Be a Democrat, but It Helps

(By Ann Coulter, AnnCoulter.com) - With the media sneering about the Tea Party candidates being a bunch of nuts, how about we take a look at some of the Democrats running this year?

We've got Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, who personally presided over the housing crash after getting that gay prostitution business behind him. Of course, Frank's actions are nothing compared to Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul's alleged participation in a college prank. Now, THERE'S a scandal!

California Sen. Barbara Boxer refuses to say whether a newborn baby is a human life. When Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn., asked her on the Senate floor a few years ago whether she believed a baby born alive has a constitutionally protected right to live, Boxer was stuck for an answer. Her nonresponsive replies included these:

"I support the Roe v. Wade decision. ...

"I think when you bring your baby home, when your baby is born -- and the baby belongs to your family and has all the rights. ...

"Define 'separation' ...

"You mean the baby has been birthed and is now in its mother's arms? ...

"The baby is born when the baby is born. That is the answer to the question. ...

"I am not answering these questions! I am not answering these questions!"

(Also, I think she said: "Please call me 'senator.'")

What 'NOT' to talk about in America

(By Victor Davis Hanson, NYPOST.com) - Americans have developed two per sonas -- one public and politically correct, the other private. Mix the two, and big trouble ensues. Some reminders on what to shut up about:

Don't discuss the deficit. Instead, call borrowing "stimulus." Debt can be paid back with more borrowing and someone else's higher taxes. Ignore the lessons of Greece and California. To appear noble, call for more unemployment benefits, free medical care and more entitlements. To sound cruel, talk about borrowing to pay for them.

Keep silent about Social Security and Medicare. If the system is insolvent, it can't be because we're living longer, retiring earlier, often taking out more than we paid into the pot, abusing disability provisions or facing an aging and soon-to-be-shrinking population. Instead, rail at fat cats who need to pay more payroll taxes and at wasteful programs, like defense, that can be cut to ensure more for the elderly and needy.

On the Daily Show, Obama is the last laugh

(By Dana Milbank, The Washington Post) - On Comedy Central, the joke was on President Obama Wednesday night.

The president had come, on the eve of what will almost certainly be the loss of his governing majority, to plead his case before Jon Stewart, gatekeeper of the disillusioned left. But instead of displaying the sizzle that won him an army of youthful supporters two years ago, Obama had a Brownie moment.

The Daily Show host was giving Obama a tough time about hiring the conventional and Clintonian Larry Summers as his top economic advisor.

"In fairness," the president replied defensively, "Larry Summers did a heckuva job."

"You don't want to use that phrase, dude," Stewart recommended with a laugh.

Dude. The indignity of a comedy show host calling the commander in chief "dude" pretty well captured the moment for Obama. He was making this first-ever appearance by a president on the Daily Show as part of a long-shot effort to rekindle the spirit of '08. In the Daily Show, Obama had a friendly host and an even friendlier crowd.

But, as in his MTV appearance a couple of weeks ago, Obama didn't try to connect with his youthful audience. He was serious and defensive, pointing a finger at his host several times as he quarreled with the premise of a question.

Weather Service to Survey Storm Damage in King

KING, NC (WGHP) - The National Weather Service will visit King on Thursday to determine if a tornado hit the area on Wednesday night.

The storm pushed through the area around 7 p.m. Strong winds and heavy rain slammed the Forest Hills Neighborhood, causing some of the worst damage in the county.

"We're doing reconnaissance checking for injuries, making sure no one is trapped and there's no danger issues like electrical or gas," said Steven Roberson, Fire Chief.

The storm knocked down several trees across the county and caused several automobile accidents on Wednesday.

"Our fire department units found an overturned vehicle in the parking lot of Pizza Hut near Hwy. 52," said Roberson.

Nancy Pardo said her home was severely damage in the storm.

Officials with the National Weather Service are expected to survey storm damage on Thursday to determine if the damage was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds.

Video: Liberal Democrat Rep claims al-Qaeda no longer a threat to the US

(By Ed Morrissey, Hot Air) - And you thought Betty McCollum couldn’t do any worse than deliberately leaving out “under God” while leading the Pledge of Allegiance in the House in April 2002. No, my friends, this is 'Minnesota' we’re talking about here. We’ve put Jesse Ventura in charge of the state and sent Al Franken to Washington. As Jack Nicholson once said in 'As Good As It Gets', “Sell crazy someplace else — we’re all stocked up here.” The Representative from MN-04 declared during her midterm election debate with Teresa Collett that al-Qaeda no longer poses a threat to the United States. No … seriously:

Dems exit rally as Bill Clinton drones

CHICAGO (By Bill Cameron, WLS) - Former President Bill Clinton’s ‘get out the vote’ rally for Democrats at a downtown Chicago hotel was the most unenthusiastic WLS veteran political reporter Bill Cameron has ever witnessed.

Clinton was an hour late for the Tuesday afternoon rally at the Palmer House and droned on for another hour, sending dozens of the few hundred Democrats in attendance for the exits.

“Well, all we’re really asking for is two more years, that’s a total of four, to get us out of the hole and get us into the future. That’s half as much time as you gave them to dig the hole. Seems fair to us,” Clinton said.

NASA mission will take astronauts to Mars -- and leave them there forever!

(By Niall Firth, (UK Mail Online) - NASA is planning an audacious mission to send a manned spacecraft on a one-way trip to permanently settle on other planets.

The ambitious idea is known as the Hundred Years Starship and would send astronauts to colonize planets like Mars, knowing they could never come home.

NASA Ames Director Pete Worden revealed that one of NASA’s main research centers, Ames Research Center, has received one million funding to start work on the project.

The research team has also received an additional $100,000 from NASA.

CHICAGOLAND: 'Glitch' with vote-by-mail system; Hundreds of thousands may be disenfranchised...

CHICAGO (WLS) - This year marks the first Illinois election that any registered voter can cast their ballot by mail, no excuses necessary. Even as the deadline for postmarking those ballots nears, problems are brewing.

An Illinois county election official says that thousands, and potentially hundreds of thousands, of voters who are expecting a ballot sent to them by mail may be disenfranchised.

Chicagoan Rosia Carter is one of 404,000 registered Illinois voters who recently received vote-by-mail requests that were sent by the Illinois Democratic Coordinated Campaign.

"By the time I filled it out and sent it in, my vote would not get counted," Carter said.

Gov Chris Christie (R-NJ) Raves Over O’Keefe ‘Teachers Gone Wild’ Video

Gov. Chris Christie comments on 'teachers unions gone wild'

This is what I’ve been talking about. This is another exhibit as to what I’ve been talking about. The arrogance, the greed, the self-interest, the lack of introspection, the lack of standards. And it hurts the great teachers just as much as it hurts the kids.

I think that this video makes the distinction better than I ever could. This is their leadership conference where they’re in a hotel, having this leadership conference, singing songs together about kicking the governor in his tool box. I wonder what they mean by that? But I can tell you I sense it would hurt.

They talk about the things... I’m not even going to say it because we have children in this audience but the things that they would have to do in order to lose tenure. And how exciting the moment is after three years when they get tenure and realize ‘ we can’t get fired for anything’.

Arizona Law Requiring Voters Prove Citizenship Is Struck Down

PHOENIX (FoxNews.com) - A federal appeals court on Tuesday struck down a key part of Arizona's law requiring voters to prove they are citizens before registering to vote and to show identification before casting ballots.

The decision by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the law requiring voters to prove their citizenship while registering is inconsistent with the National Voter Registration Act. That federal law allows voters to fill out a mail-in voter registration card and swear they are citizens under penalty of perjury, but doesn't require them to show proof as Arizona's law does.

The ruling left in place a requirement that voters provide proof of identity when casting ballots.

Sesame Street Tweet Sparks Rumors That Bert Is Out of the Closet

(By Diane Macedo, FoxNews.com) - He's lived with a man for 31 years and wears turtlenecks and saddle shoes, and rumors of his homosexuality have swirled for years. But no one's ever heard directly from Sesame Street's Bert on his sexuality, until now… sort of.

On June 11, the famous puppet tweeted about the recent "A-Team" remake by comparing himself to A-Team star Mr-T, saying, "Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T's? The only difference is mine is a little more 'mo,' a little less 'hawk.'"

To some the comment was just a cute quip about hairstyles, but to others, "mo" was short for "homo" and this was Bert's way of coming out at the perfect time.

King Officials Delay Christian Flag Decision

KING, NC (WGHP) - In a meeting to decide their next move concerning the controversial Christian flag issue here, city leaders delayed any further action during a closed door session Tuesday.

For more than a month, the city's decision to remove a Christian flag from the Veteran's Memorial has sparked outrage from supporters.

"The flag means something," said Pastor Kenny Heath of Faith Baptist Church. "It's a representation of what we believe in. It's worth fighting for (and) in my heart fight for what's right."

STOKES COUNTY, NC (WGHP) - The National Weather Service will visit Flat Shoals in the Quaker Gap Community on Wednesday to determine if a tornado touched down late Tuesday night.

Officials said there were trees on vehicles along Flat Shoals Road and a car port collapsed late Tuesday night. Stokes County Fire Marshal Frankie Burcham said pieces from the car port were found in a nearby tree, giving him reason to believe a tornado may have touched down.

Old Footage Confuses Larry King Into Thinking Julian Assange Walked Out On Him

(By Frances Martel, Mediaite) - What does it say about your reputation for taking a hard question when your interview confuses old clips of your behavior with live events? Temperamental Wikileaks founder Julian Assange had to bear being talked to in the third person for a few seconds tonight as Larry King mistakenly assumed that old footage of him walking out on CNN International’s Atika Shubert was live footage of Assange walking out on 'him'.

King had not even gotten through a complete question about the Shubert interview when footage started playing of his walk-out, to which King responds “oh, he walking off again” and turns to his other guest Daniel Ellsberg, for an answer, only to tell himself hopelessly, “you can’t answer for him.” Then the cameras shift back and King, pleasantly surprised, realizes his mistake when he hears Assange respond to his question (albeit in typical form).

Paul had correctly predicted key games in World Cup

FRANKFURT, Germany (NBC Sports) - Paul the Octopus, the tentacled tipster who fascinated football fans by predicting results at the World Cup, died Tuesday.

Paul had reached the octopus old age of 2½ years and died in his tank on Tuesday morning at the Sea Life aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen, spokeswoman Ariane Vieregge said.

Paul correctly tipped the outcome of all seven of Germany's games. He made his predictions by opening the lid of one of two clear plastic boxes, each containing a mussel and bearing a team flag.

The octopus seemed to be in good shape when he was checked late Monday, but he did not make it through the night. He died of natural causes, Vieregge said.

"We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed," Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll said in a statement.

Paul the “Oracle Octopus,” who thrilled soccer fans with his correct predictions during the World Cup, has died of natural causes at an aquarium in Germany.

Maine Weighs Letting Non-Citizens Vote

PORTLAND, Maine (FoxNews.com) - Like his neighbors, Claude Rwaganje pays taxes on his income and taxes on his cars. His children have gone to Portland's public schools. He's interested in the workings of Maine's largest city, which he has called home for 13 years.

There's one vital difference, though: Rwaganje isn't a U.S. citizen and isn't allowed to vote on those taxes or on school issues. That may soon change.

Portland residents will vote Nov. 2 on a proposal to give legal residents who are not U.S. citizens the right to vote in local elections, joining places like San Francisco and Chicago that have already loosened the rules or are considering it.

Noncitizens hold down jobs, pay taxes, own businesses, volunteer in the community and serve in the military, and it's only fair they be allowed to vote, Rwaganje said.

Aide fired over Florida debate foul

Tampa (CNN) – Alex Sink’s campaign violated rules Monday evening at the CNN/St. Petersburg Times Florida gubernatorial debate when her make-up artist delivered a message during a television break.

Sink, the Democratic nominee, was shown a two-sentence message on a cell phone that offered her advice during the debate. Republican nominee Rick Scott who was sitting next to her in this nationally televised debate, noticed the violation and notified a CNN official, who approached the make-up artist and Sink and confiscated the cell phone.

The message read: “The attorney who [w]on the Sykes suit said alex sink did nothing wrong. Tell not to let him keep talking about her.”

MoveOn.org Protester Stomped on at Kentucky Senate Debate

(Breitbart.tv) - A MoveOn.org protester was wrestled to the ground and stomped on by a Rand Paul supporter after she tried to perform a stunt with the Kentucky Senate candidate. Dressed with a blonde wig and carrying a sign, the protester identified as Lauren Valle, intended to give Mr. Paul an "award" on behalf of the fictitious "Republicorp", a creation of MoveOn.org meant to represent the merger of corporations and the Republican party. The Paul campaign itself was not involved and expressed regret and concern for the incident.

Nevada Voters Complain Of Problems At Polls

Clark County Insists Election Fraud-Free

LAS VEGAS (KVVU Las Vegas) -
Some voters in Boulder City complained on Monday that their ballot had been cast before they went to the polls, raising questions about Clark County's electronic voting machines.

Voter Joyce Ferrara said when they went to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, her Democratic opponent, Sen. Harry Reid's name was already checked.

Ferrara said she wasn't alone in her voting experience. She said her husband and several others voting at the same time all had the same thing happen.

"Something's not right," Ferrara said. "One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five minute period of time -- that's wrong."

Gaps in Voter Registration Process Raise Concerns of Fraud

Affadavit seen as insufficient safeguard to keep non-citizens from polls

RALEIGH (By Kristy Bailey, Carolina Journal Online) —
Anyone possessing a North Carolina driver’s license, a Social Security card, a utility bill — and a willingness to lie on a voter registration form — can establish enough “proof” of citizenship allowing him to register to vote in North Carolina.

Moreover, the state’s system of allowing voter registration by mail and same-day registration at early voting sites operates essentially on the honor system. The registration form requires each applicant to sign an affidavit confirming that the applicant is a U.S. citizen.

The penalty for “knowingly” providing a false statement on the form is a felony. But critics say the process for checking citizenship status is lax, so anyone with phony documents and no qualms about choosing untruthfully the “yes” box under “Are you a U.S. citizen?” has a good chance of beating the system.

Aide to Harry Reid Lied to Feds, Submitted False Documents About Sham Marriage

(By Jana Winter, FoxNews.com) - An aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid repeatedly lied to federal immigration and FBI agents and submitted false federal documents to the Department of Homeland Security to cover up her illegal seven-year marriage to a Lebanese national who was the subject of an Oklahoma City Joint Terror Task Force investigation, FoxNews.com has learned.

Diana Tejada, Reid’s Hispanic Press Secretary, admitted to receiving payment for “some of her expenses” in exchange for fraudulently marrying Bassam Mahmoud Tarhini in 2003, strictly so he could obtain permanent U.S. residency, according to court documents.

Tarhini, now 37, was held in jail and at an immigration detention center in connection with his 2009 indictment on felony charges, documents show. He pleaded guilty to entering a fraudulent marriage to evade immigration laws — a Class D felony — in November 2009, and he was deported in March 2010.

AFL-CIO official: Jesus couldn't do anything more than Obama has done

Union Big Says Obama Just as Good as Jesus

(By Kerry Picket, Washington Times) - If you thought liberals stopped admiring President Barack Obama as the Messiah, think again. In an October 15th piece about union membership's lack of enthusiasm for the 2010 campaign, the Associated Press interviewed Herb Johnson, secretary-treasurer of the Missouri AFL-CIO. He gave his explanation as to why he thinks union members and their households are less than excited about this year's mid-term elections:

"Sometimes you have to remind people that, `Hey, Jesus Christ couldn't do anything more than President Obama has on the agenda we supported two years ago without the United States Senate having the votes for cloture to overcome a filibuster" by Republicans, said Herb Johnson, secretary-treasurer of the Missouri AFL-CIO.

Video of Democrat Omitting, "Under God", While Leading the Pledge of Allegiance on the House Floor

(By Tom Hawks, The Hawk Report) - Thanks to a pissed off MN CD 4 voter for finding this gem and sharing with us. What you will see is a sad display of disrespect by a United States Congresswoman from Minnesota, Democrat Betty McCollum. It is a video that Betty does not want her voters to see, but it's too late Betty, you have been exposed.

After watching this video you will see how obvious it is that she intentionally omitted the words, "Under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. At the time, her staffers claimed she took a breath, but with the video now out, the lie has been exposed. She intentionally omitted the phrase.

What really makes this an affront to all is that she was actually leading the pledge on the floor of the House. If she were just saying it as a part of the whole chamber it would have been fine. However, by omitting the words, "under God", she was actually showing her disrespect to her position, the Flag, God and the American people. Oh, did I mention that she likes to brag about her Catholic faith when running for re-election?

Dem Says GOP Hopeful Wants to Shoot Gays in the Head

(BY MARK J. KONKOL, Chicago Sun-Times) - Always-outspoken state Sen. Rickey Hendon on Saturday took aim at Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Brady at a "get out the vote" rally on the West Side.

"I've never served with such an idiotic, racist, sexist, homophobic person in my life," Hendon said before introducing Gov. Quinn. "If you think that the minimum wage needs to be three dollars an hour, vote for Bill Brady. If you think that women have no rights whatsoever, except to have his children, vote for Bill Brady. If you think gay and lesbian people need to be locked up and shot in the head, vote for Bill Brady."

Quinn tried to distance himself from the remarks, telling reporters, "I don't associate myself with those comments."

"I believe in civility," he said. "I disagree with people in politics, like my opponent Sen. Brady. I don't engage in name calling. Never have, never will."

Hendon later told the Chicago Sun-Times that his harsh characterization of Brady, a state senator from Downstate Bloomington, was based on the candidate's voting record. Hendon claims Brady has regularly voted against bills that have affirmative-action components that affect minorities, women and gays.

And Hendon says he won't take it back.

'60 Minutes' Blows Lid Off Unemployment Situation

Scott Pelley Reports On The Growing Number of Americans Who Are Exhausting Their Benefits

(CBS) - The economic jam we're in has topped even the Great Depression in one respect: never have we had a recession this deep with a recovery this flat. Unemployment has been at nine and a half percent or above for 14 months.

Congress did something that it has never done before - it extended unemployment benefits to 99 weeks. That cost more than $100 billion, a huge expense for a government in debt.

But now, for many Americans 99 weeks have passed and there's still no job in sight. Some have taken to calling themselves the "99ers."

"60 Minutes" and correspondent Scott Pelley went to several communities in search of the 99ers, but we didn't expect to find such a crisis in Silicon Valley, the high tech capital that many people hoped would be creating jobs.

If you want to understand why the economy is stalled, come to San Jose, Calif., and talk with 99ers like Marianne Rose. "I remember it coming close to like six months. I was saying, 'I can't believe I'm out of work this long.' Then the year mark hit. And I just started just panicking seriously. Now that it's over two years I can't believe it. I just, I can't believe it," she told Pelley.

Rose was a financial analyst at a real estate firm. Age 54, she's single with a grown daughter. After being laid off with about 100 co-workers, she spent her savings, lost her home and finally found herself sitting in a truck with her dog and all of her possessions.

VP Joe Biden: Conservative groups spending $200 'billion' on midterm elections

(By Ed Morrissey, Hot Air) - Remember, Barack Obama says that choosing Joe Biden to be one heartbeat away from the presidency is “the single best decision I have made.” At least Obama applied the right scale in his statement. Biden told Bloomberg News that Democrats would definitely hold the Senate and likely keep the House despite the “$200 billion” conservative groups have spent in the midterm elections:

Could ObamaCare sound death knell for employer-based health coverage?

(By Ed Morrissey, Hot Air) - Yes, says a Democratic governor. No, says the White House. And the private sector will wait for one or two major employers to dump health-care coverage before beginning a stampede, the AP reported over the weekend, as businesses look at the expanding costs of health insurance in the mandate-filled world of ObamaCare:

While it’s too early to proclaim the demise of job-based coverage, corporate number crunchers are looking at options that could lead to major changes.

“The economics of dropping existing coverage is about to become very attractive to many employers, both public and private,” said Gov. Phil Bredesen, D-Tenn.

That’s just not going to happen, White House officials say.

“The absolute certainty about the Affordable Care Act is that for many, many employers who cover millions of people, it increases the incentives for them to offer coverage,” said Jason Furman, an economic adviser to President Barack Obama.

Video: Nancy Pelosi promises “no new deficit spending” in 2007

(By Ed Morrissey, Hot Air) - CNS News and the Media Research Center climb into the Wayback Machine and travel to January 4, 2007, Nancy Pelosi’s first day as Speaker of the House, to recall this gem of a political promise. After years of overspending by Republicans, Democrats had run on a platform of fiscal responsibility and taken control of both chambers of Congress in the 2006 midterm elections. Pelosi started off the 110th Session of Congress by declaring an end to deficit spending:

America hasn't improved much over past 3 decades, Jimmy Carter says

(By Jessica Harrison, Deseret News) - America is no better off now than it was in the late 1970s and early 1980s, says former President Jimmy Carter. From national politics to relationships with other nations, there is a lot of room for improvement.

"We had almost complete harmony with every nation on Earth," the Nobel Peace Prize winner said of his administration. "We not only preserved peace for our country, we never went to war. We never dropped a bomb. We never fired a missile."

Carter, who will be at the King's English Bookshop in Salt Lake City Thursday morning, spoke with the Deseret News about how things have changed since his presidency, how things have remained the same and what life was like in the White House, during a round of press interviews for his new book, "White House Diary."
